A tremor-steadying spoon, in development

Let them hold their own spoon.

Two in three people with essential tremor struggle to use a spoon. Some quietly stop eating in front of others.

Sthir is a spoon that senses hand tremor and moves against it, so the bowl stays level and eating stays yours.

  • Feels the shakeA tiny sensor in the handle catches it as it starts.
  • Moves against itA small motor pushes back within milliseconds.
  • Keeps the bowl levelSo the spoon reaches the mouth full, not spilled.

It starts with the spoon.

Every spoonful. Every meal. In front of everyone. Some quietly stop trying.

How it works

A spoon that cancels the shake.

Three small parts work together inside a handle that is meant to feel like an ordinary spoon.

  1. 01

    It feels the shake.

A tiny sensor in the handle catches the tremor the moment it starts.

  2. 02

    It moves against it.

A small motor shifts the bowl the opposite way, so the two movements cancel.

  3. 03

    It keeps the bowl level.

What reaches the mouth is steady. The hand can still shake. The spoon does not.

Why I'm building this

My mother lives with SCA12, a rare inherited condition that affects balance and movement.

Two years ago I first saw what that does to something as ordinary as a meal. So I started building Sthir.

Steadying a spoon is solved. Affording one in India is not.

Imported ones cost ₹35,000 to over ₹2,00,000. Most families will never spend that on a spoon.
